Dr. Obaid Al Zaabi: For the 3rd  year in a row… the UAE advances in the Minority Investors Protection Index at the World Bank Report

Occupying the 9th rank internationally reflects the SCA’s efforts in issuing the regulations and advancing the supervisory performance

Dr. Obaid Al Zaabi, Acting CEO of the SCA, stated that the Doing Business Report 2017 issued by the World Bank Group revealed that UAE has advanced on the Minority Investors Protection Index for the 3rd year in a row. This year, the UAE advanced 39 places among 190 countries covered by the report. The scores recorded by the UAE increased from 6 to 7.5, close to New Zealand which was ranked the first place with total scores of 8.3.

The Minority Investors Protection Index is one of the key indexes in the Doing Business Report issued by the World Bank every year. This index measures matters related to the rights of the minority investors in relation to related party transactions and their rights in relation to the corporate governance and protecting them from the abuse of their assets by the company managers to obtain personal interests. On the other hand, the report affirmed the positive relation between protection of the minority investors’ rights on the one hand and finance of companies through the equity capital on the other hand whereas collection of funds from the equity capital is easier and less costly.
